Astor Place is named for John Jacob Astor (1763-1848), the first millionaire in the United States. Astor Place was the site of the Astor Place Opera House, where the Astor Place Riot of 1849 took place. The trapezium-shaped traffic island in the center of Astor Place is a popular meeting place with an alternative flavor. The Astor Place Subway station is among the original 28 subway stations.
