Flatbush Avenue is the central artery of the borough of Brooklyn, the most populous in New York. It takes its name from the Anglicized form of a Dutch name, V’lacke Bos (or wooded plain). Originally an Indian trail, Flatbush Avenue runs from the Manhattan Bridge southeastward to Jamaica Bay. It creates the borders of neighborhoods such as Brooklyn Heights / Downtown Brooklyn, Prospect Heights / Park Slope, and Flatbush / East Flatbush. In the late 1920s it was straightened to its current form.
