Dolores Street lies in the old Mission District of San Francisco. On this street is Mission Dolores (also known as Mission San Francisco de Asís), a modest adobe chapel, one of the two original missions in San Francisco and the oldest standing building in the city. Dolores is a common female name in the Spanish-speaking world (literally meaning “Pains”, from Virgin Mary at her Pains), being “Lola” its most usual nickname.
