Devon Avenue is a major east-west thoroughfare in the Chicago metropolitan area. It begins at Chicago's Sheridan Road, which borders Lake Michigan. Devon runs intermittently through Chicago's northwestern suburbs. The street was originally known as Church Road, but it was renamed in the 1850s by English immigrants from Devonshire. Since then, the street has been settled by many other immigrant groups (Orthodox Jewish, Russian, Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi, among others). Here is the Loyola University Chicago, a famous private Jesuit university established in 1870 as Saint Ignatius College.
