Chicago Avenue is a major east-west arterial that runs just north of downtown Chicago. It originates at the shores of Lake Michigan in the Gold Coast neighborhood, ending just north of Melrose Park. It crosses through the largely impoverished Austin and Humboldt Park neighborhoods. The street takes its name from the city, which in turn derives its name from the French rendering of the Miami-Illinois language “shikaakwa”, meaning “wild leek” (an analogical extension of the original meaning of “skunk”).
