Toulouse St ("Rue Toulouse" in French) is a street in the historic French Quarter, intersecting Bourbon and Royal. Here was erected in 1859 the Old French Opera House, with its 80-foot high loft towering above all of the buildings of the French Quarter. It was the cultural center of New Orleans Creole society, and the first opera house in the United States, until it burned down in 1919. Tennessee Williams moved to this street in 1939 and he placed also here the setting of his 1977 play “Vieux Carré”. Toulouse is a city in southwest France by the Garonne river, half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, the fifth-largest in the country.
