This street is named after Queen Victoria (1819-1901). She was the last monarch of the House of Hanover and gave her name to an era, the Victorian Age. During her reign the English monarchy took on its modern ceremonial character. She had nine children, through whose marriages were descended many of the royal families of Europe. The Victorian era was at the height of the Industrial Revolution, a period of significant social, economic, and technological progress in the United Kingdom. Victoria's reign was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire.
