Interstate 40 (I-40) is an east-west transcontinental Interstate highway in the United States running from California to North Carolina. The stretch of the route in Texas is located in the northwest part of the state and passes through the panhandle and the city of Amarillo. It begins at the New Mexico state line and ends at the Oklahoma state line. The road, opened in 1959, crosses the counties of Deaf Smith, Oldham, Potter, Carson, Gray, Donley, and Wheeler.
