Interstate 40 (I-40) is an east-west transcontinental Interstate highway in the United States running from California to North Carolina. The stretch of the route in Tennessee is 455 miles long and passes through the whole state in a west-east direction from the Mississippi River at the Arkansas border to the Great Smoky Mountains at the border with North Carolina. The route connects Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville, Tennessee's three largest cities.
