Place Saint-Germain des Prés

Paris, France

Street name

“Saint Germain of the Fields Square”. This square in the 6th arrondissement, part of the neighborhood of Saint-Germain des Prés, was opened in 1866. Here lay the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, built in the fields just beyond the outskirts of early medieval Paris. It was the burial place of Merovingian kings. The Abbey was founded in the 6th century by Childebert I (496-598), the son of Clovis. An accidental explosion during the French Revolution destroyed most of the Abbey. In our days only the church of the abbey remains, known as the Église de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. After Second World War, the whole neighborhood of Saint-Germain des Prés became an important point in Paris intellectual and artistic life, gathering people from very different spheres (Boris Vian, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, Juliette Gréco, Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Jacques Prévert, Giacometti, etc.) around now legendary places as Café des Deux Magots or Café de Flore.
