Place de la Bastille

Location:

Paris, France

Type:

Street name

The Place de la Bastille is a square in Paris, where the Bastille prison stood until its destruction during the French Revolution. No vestige of the building remains. The square straddles the 4th, 11th and 12th arrondissements (districts). On the centre stands the July Column which commemorates the events of the July Revolution (1830). Other landmarks are Bastille Opera and a section of the Canal Saint Martin. As a consequence of its historical significance, the square is often used for political demonstrations and is also home to concerts and similar events. It is busy at night due to its many cafés, bars and night clubs. Built originally as a fortress in the 14th century, La Bastille was converted into a prison in the 17th century. One of its famous inmates was Marquis de Sade.
