Avenue des Champs-Élysées

Paris, France

Street name

“Elysian Fields Avenue”. Avenue des Champs-Élysées is the most famous and broadest (75 yd) avenue in Paris. It remains the most expensive strip of real estate in Europe and the second in the world after New York’s Fifth Avenue. The Champs-Élysées are lined with luxury shops, cinemas, theaters and restaurants. The name refers to the Elysian Fields, the place of the blessed in Greek mythology. The avenue runs for 1.25 miles through the 8th arrondissement (district), from the Place de la Concorde to the Place Charles de Gaulle (location of the Arc de Triomphe). The Champs-Élysées forms part of the Historical Axis. It is one of the principal tourist destinations in Paris. Its lower part is bordered by greenery. Every year on Bastille Day, the largest military parade in Europe passes down the Champs-Élysées and it is also the traditional end of the last stage of the Tour de France. This avenue has been called in the past Allée du Roule and Avenue de Neuilly, receiving its present name in 1864.
