“Descartes Street”. This mostly pedestrian street stretches 284 yd in the 5th arrondissement (district). It was named after René Descartes (1596-1650), a French philosopher, mathematician, scientist, and writer, dubbed the "Father of Modern Philosophy and Mathematics”. His most renown books are “Discourse on the Method” and “Principles of Philosophy”. Descartes is the author of the famous statement in Latin “Cogito ergo sum” (“I think, therefore I am”). He died in Sweden. The street was called in the 13th century rue Bordet (also spelled as Bourdet, Bourdelle, Bordelle, that is, "brothel"). It's also been called Rue de la Porte Saint-Marcel. It took its present name in 1809.
