A skunk can cause a deal of misery when it turns its back and decorates you with its anal gland. Experienced black bears have been to know to flee in terror, so all-in-all this is a little horror. Charles Darwin described a skunk he met as ‘roaming confidently tail in air and fearing neither dog nor man’.

Skunks Misery Road is in Templeton, Massachusetts. This is an unremarkable place unless you count a library towards which each citizen contributes $6 annually. The road winds up a hill into a forest. So far, nobody has built there, but you can take a chance if you have zero sense of smell, and don’t mind moose dropping scat and popping your seeds.
