Bitche is a commune in the Lorraine countryside in France where they make a lot of wine. We think there might be a divorce court nearby because the surrounding countryside is known as Pays de Bitche and the Germans call it Bitscherland. We might just possibly be having you on because the name actually comes from the Roman ‘Bytis Castrum’ castle that still looks out across the town. Do you suppose that when a Count of Bitche married and his wife started dishing out the orders, the chambermaids in the kitchen called the lucky lady one too?
